About

hello, friend!

Emily Cheng (known professionally as GISULA, pronounced jih-SOO-la), is a Taiwanese-American composer, instrumentalist, and music producer. Originally an award-winning classically-trained pianist and hip hop producer, her work has expanded through genres across film, animation, videogames, podcasts, and more.

Her music often blends diverse styles and global instruments, and she’s passionate about combining eastern and western sounds in her work. While she works in many genres, her favorite media categories are fantasy, sci-fi (space westerns & cyberpunk especially), action, horror, mystery, and anything with magic.

As a classical pianist, she has over two decades of experience and successfully competed at regional championships. As a cellist, she has nearly a decade of experience playing. She has also worked with a cappella groups, music direction, and arranging.

As a composer, she won first place at the 2022 Berlin International Film Scoring Competition and placed in the semifinals (Top 16) of the 2021 Krakow Film Music Festival Scoring Competition.

She’s a big TTRPG fan and an unabashed enjoyer of playing in sandboxes and storytelling of all forms. She’s also an enthusiast of reptiles, collecting swords, and cooking new dishes from various cuisines. She sometimes makes art.
